Somerset have had strong links to the West Indies since the 1970s when, as part of the Somerset Glory Years team, both Viv Richards and Joel Garner played their way into supporters hearts forever.
In more recent years the likes of Kieron Pollard and Chris Gayle have lit up the Cooper Associates County Ground with their considerable talents.
India’s finest have also plied their trade in Taunton. In 1980 the great batsman Sunil Gavaskar became Somerset’s overseas player whilst in more recent years Piyush Chawla wrote his name in to Somerset folklore during his short stay after become one of the very few players to appear on both our batting and bowling honours boards.
Both India and the West Indies have played matches at Taunton regularly and the last time that the West Indies A team played at the Cooper Associates County Ground Somerset’s opponents featured a number of players who went on to make names for themselves on the biggest stage.
The three-day match that began on July 24th 2002 and although it ended in a draw, those present witnessed the first steps on the road to super-stardom for the likes of Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, Daren Powell, Sulieman Benn and Lendl Simmons to name but a few.
