Winning start for Somerset Women
Somerset Women enjoyed the best of a friendly against Western Storm’s Regional Development Centre squad last Wednesday in a pre-season friendly that provided a chance to look at potential players for this season and the future.
Having won the toss, Western Storm RDC elected to bat and were soon finding runs hard to come by as both Cassie Coombes (one for 17 off eight Overs) and Georgia Tulip (two for seven off five overs) kept things tight. On a slow pitch the RDC lost two quick wickets and failed to capitalise on the new ball coming onto the bat while trying to consolidate.
Rebecca Halliday (41 not out) held things together as others fell around her and, with Nicole Richards (two for 16 off seven overs) turning the screw, the last wicket to fall fell to debutant India Owen with the score on 88.
The RDC agreed to a revised target of 160 off 40 overs in reply.
Despite Emma Godman falling early for seven, her opening partner Richards (42) built a substantial partnership with Somerset Captain Sophie Luff, who retired after reaching 53* off just 56 balls.
At that point the game had swung very much in Somerset’s favour and it was left to Owen (24* off 29 balls) and Coombes (16* off 29) to see Somerset over the line as the side reached 161 for two in 34 overs.
Somerset Women are next in action on Sunday April 28th at Taunton School in a friendly against Devon.
The team then start the season with a Bank Holiday double-header against Wales and Durham at Taunton C.C. over the Bank Holiday weekend of May 5th and 6th.
Anyone wishing to support the team is welcome, the Monday game is highlighted as part of the #YourCounty Twitter campaign.
