Babar Azam lights up the World Cup
Babar Azam, who will play for Somerset in this year’s Vitality Blast, produced a glorious display of batting as he helped to keep Pakistan’s 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup dreams alive at Edgbaston.
Needing to beat New Zealand to realistically keep their chances of making the knock-out stages of the competition on track, the 24-year-old treated the watching world to a batting masterclass as Pakistan won by six wickets. His sumptuous innings of 101 not out came from 127 balls and featured 11 fours.
During the course of his innings he also passed the 3000 ODI run mark, becoming the second quickest man in ODI history to achieve that feat.
He has now scored 333 runs in the 2109 ICC Cricket World Cup, putting him fifth on the list of highest run scorers under the age of 25 in a single World Cup.
Following his flawless performance, Somerset’s Vitality Blast signing said: “This is my best innings. The wicket was very difficult and turned a lot in the second half. The plan was to go through to the end and give 100%.
“When we started, the plan was to see out Ferguson, but when Santner came on the plan became not to give wickets to him and cover up later when the fast bowlers come on.
“We are confident and we are taking it match by match. Hopefully we will qualify and we are very focussed on this.”
You can see Babar Azam in action in the Vitality Blast at the Cooper Associates County Ground this summer.
