Ben happy to be giving something back

Ben Green has been giving something back to his home County.

The 24-year-old has been using his expertise to benefit Devon’s young players, as he explained when we spoke to him recently.

“I’ve been working with the Devon age groups for the last few weeks, which is really exciting,” he said.

“Before Covid, I did my level two coaching course down in Devon. The coaches that I was working with told me to give them a call if I ever wanted to get involved. That was something that I really wanted to do, so I went down for a few of the age group sessions. I’ve now committed myself to the Emerging Players Programme which is every Thursday and I’m also going to be involved with as many Sunday sessions as I can down there throughout the winter.”

How important is it for players to take on roles like this?

“I think it’s hugely important,” said Ben. “I can attribute a lot of my early success to Devon, and they played a big part in getting me to where I am today. It’s also a great opportunity for me to explore and improve my coaching. Hopefully, I can help get some young players who were in the position that I was in to where I am now and beyond. That would be a great feeling.”

Ben believes that successful partnerships with our National County partners is absolutely crucial.

“We’ve seen the benefits of our relationships with Nation County partners with the likes of Lewis Goldsworthy coming through from Cornwall and Sonny Baker emerging from Devon. It’s the Somerset squad, but it has a really South West feel to it. It’s something that I think is unique to Somerset. Not many other clubs have the opportunity to be able to work so closely with so many National County partners, and it’s certainly a relationship that benefits all those involved. Long may that continue.”

Sandy Allen, Pathway and Coaching Manager for Devon Cricket, said: “It’s great having Ben involved in our winter programme. He brings a wealth of knowledge of the modern game, along with having been through the Devon Pathway. It is fantastic for our young aspiring players to see someone who has stood in their shoes and gone on to play professionally.

“Ben is brilliant with the players technically and tactically and also from a mentoring point of view.”
