Ben looking to build on 2021

2021 was a pretty good year for Ben Green.

As well as captaining the team in the Royal London Cup, he also made a number of match winning contributions in the LV= Insurance County Championship and the Vitality Blast.

How would he sum up his season?

“I feel like I have taken a few steps forward this year,” he said. “The leadership role was great and to help contribute to some wins was incredibly pleasing.”

How proud is he of the team he skippered?

“I’m hugely proud of the team,” he said. “It was the coming together of people who are at very different stages of their careers, and this is a really exciting time for Somerset. The young players who emerged during the competition and held their hands up throughout the tournament was great to see and witnessing the more experienced players offering their knowledge and skills sets to those younger guys was brilliant. I think we came together as a group really well during that competition and it was a real shame that we couldn’t have progressed further because I feel that we have the talent in the side to do that.”

The return of crowds in 2021 ensured that the Cooper Associates County Ground was packed for the Vitality Blast quarter-final against Lancashire Lightning and it is a game that Ben will remember fondly.

“The ground was absolutely bouncing against Lancashire in the quarter-final and that’s what we play cricket for. It’s fantastic to be a part of nights like that. I was really proud to be a part of the Blast team. I had a different role in a lot of the games, and I love that challenge. I just tried to adapt to what the team needed at the time.”

Ben played a huge part in the dramatic semi-final win over Hampshire Hawks on Finals Day. What was it like to be involved in an encounter like that?

“We knew that we had to take it deep and give ourselves a chance in the last few overs. Fortunately, a combination of me closing my eyes and swinging hard when the bowler put it where I wanted paid off! You can’t lose sight of how well Tom Abell played in that game because he was the main reason why we were able to do what we did at the end. It was a fantastic game and one that I won’t forget. When I was out there, it was like I was in a bubble of clarity. That doesn’t happen too often in front of a crowd like that. I knew I wanted to run twos and run hard and thankfully a few went out of the park. When JD hit the winning runs, it was just pure elation, and the dugout went berserk. It was an amazing feeling and there was so much emotion within the group.”

How would the all-rounder evaluate the team’s red-ball campaign?

“We played some really good red-ball cricket at the start of the season, but I don’t think that we were actually at our best. We beat some very good teams without playing at our best. That sends a huge message to us all that we should be incredibly confident in our red-ball game. Obviously, the back end of the year wasn’t ideal, but those kinds of things can happen in cricket. We have discussed this and I’m confident that we will get back to being the side that we know we are. One of the biggest learnings that we’ve taken is that a loss doesn’t define us. We shouldn’t panic because we know that we are a really good side.”

What does the winter have in store for Ben?

“This winter I will be doing some good hard training here in Taunton and I’ll also be doing some coaching back in Devon. In addition to that I’m looking into some personal development opportunities and potentially some work experience in different sectors.”

What are Ben’s hopes for next year?

“Hopefully, this year will be a building block to progressing even more in 2022. I want to be more heavily involved in match-changing performances and I’d like to be more heavily involved in the red-ball side. I want to kick on with my white-ball game too and hopefully we can pick up a trophy.”
