Craig excited by Lions challenge
Craig Overton is looking forward to his busy winter.
The all-rounder is currently at Loughborough with the rest of the England Lions squad before they travel to the UAE to take part in one four-day ‘Test’ versus Pakistan A, as well as five A team ‘ODIs’ and two A Team ‘IT20s’ against the same opposition.
Craig has been selected in both squads and is keen to get started.
“I can’t wait to challenge myself against opposition players from different countries,” he said. “It’ll be a good experience and hopefully I can take a lot from it and bring it back here to Somerset.
Next year is a massive one for England with the Ashes and the World Cup, so I’m really pleased to be in both squads. Hopefully I can perform well, have a big winter and get in to one of those squads.”
Craig is also happy that he is joined in the Lions by teammates Dom Bess, Lewis Gregory and his brother Jamie. “It’s nice to have those guys around,” he said. “It just goes to show that the system is working at Somerset and that we’re doing things right. Jack’s in Sri Lanka with the Test squad, we’re all with the Lions and there’s a good group of players in the Young Lions too. The Academy and Pathway are doing a really good job and I’m sure they’ll keep producing quality players who will push for a First Team place. That pressure will make the more senior players better.
“Familiar faces are also important when you’re away on tour because if you’re struggling a little bit you can speak with them. They know what you’re like and what you need, so that’s pretty handy.”
How does it feel to have a cricket ball back in his hand?
“It feels good. The main thing now is getting the loadings and the rhythms back. It’s coming out alright at the moment and it’ll get more accurate as we pick up the intensity. The more I bowl, the better I’ll get. This will be more of a playing tour but there will be times to have some gym sessions and things like that. I’ll be in touch with Joel Tratt (SCCC Head of Strength & Conditioning) and we’ll all make sure that we’re on top of what we need to be doing.”
After Lions duty it will be back to pre-season training with Somerset. Is that something he is looking forward to?
“Preseason is good in someways but hard in others,” he said. “The weather isn’t always ideal, but it’ll be good to get back together with the group and catch up with everyone. The squad keeps developing and we’ve now all got another year’s experience. The bowling group is still quite young and the addition of Jack Brooks will really add something to that.”
Craig also had a message for the Somerset Members and supporters.
“The fans here are just phenomenal,” he said. “They give us such a lift and there’s always a real buzz around the ground. We really enjoy playing in front of them.”
