Craig's Ashes Diary: Part Seven
Craig Overton has been keeping Somerset supporters up to date with everything Down Under this winter with his Ashes Diary.
Here is the final installment:
“This part of the tour started off with a flight from Melbourne to Sydney on New Years eve in time for us to get ready for the celebrations of NYE. There was a location organised for us to see the New Year in and it was probably up there with one of the best views you get of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The fireworks were incredible and so they should be after they spent 7 million Australian dollars on them!
“On New years day we were invited alongside the Aussies to an official function to meet the Australian Prime Minister at his house in Kirribilli.
“The following day the preparations for the Test Match began and unfortunately I was ruled out as I was still feeling slightly sore because of the ribs. However, I managed to get into the gym and do some work so I was kept busy for a bit.
“It was disappointing to miss out again but there’s a process behind it and I’d rather miss a week of cricket than make it worse again and potentially miss another eight weeks of cricket.
“The Test obviously didn’t go to plan again. The boys have worked extremely hard this week and it just hasn’t quite gone our way.
“The third and the fourth days were the hottest days that I’ve ever experienced whilst being involved in cricket. The fourth day was a staggering 50-plus degrees inside the stadium which was excruciating. I continued to do gym and running sessions throughout the Test match to keep my fitness levels up.
“I’m flying home this week and looking forward to seeing all the boys back at home again. I’m not so sure about the cold weather that I’m going to be witnessing though!”
