Dom ready for a busy winter

Dom Bess is one of the Somerset contingent who will be representing the England Lions in the UAE this winter.

The team will take part in one four-day ‘Test’ versus Pakistan A, as well as five A team ‘ODIs’ and two A Team ‘IT20s’ against the same opposition.

Dom has been selected in both squads and is pleased that there will be some familiar faces alongside him in the dressing room.

“It’ll be really good,” he said. “Obviously to be able to make the trip with Craig, Jamie and Lewis is great and hopefully it will give us the chance to show everybody what we can do. It’s a great opportunity for me to be playing both red ball and white ball cricket and I can’t wait to get out there and bowl some overs and have a hit.

“To have the four of us playing for the Lions as well as Leachy playing for the Test team and four guys being with the Young Lions just shows that it’s a really exciting time for Somerset at the moment. I remember being a youngster here and all we were wanting to do was break in to the First Team and then push on to get England recognition. It’s great that that’s happening and it’s definitely good to be a part of that.”

Dom is also pleased that Jack Leach will be part of the England Test squad in Sri Lanka.

“Jack’s shown a lot of mental toughness this year and obviously I’m really pleased for him,” Dom said. “He’s done really well and he’s taken his opportunities. I was there at the other end when he got hit by Morne Morkel and he came back from that. He came back from his thumb injury as well and he certainly deserves his call up.”

Although the majority of players are taking a few well deserved weeks off, Dom and his fellow Lions have been back at the Cooper Associates County Ground already, as he explained: “I actually had a bowl this morning and it seemed to be coming out alright. It’s a case of starting out slowly and then ramping it up when we get together for a few camps before setting off.”

What was it like making his Test debut at Lord’s?

“Obviously, it was very pleasing for me to be able to prove that I could do that. It was an amazing and phenomenal experience. To be able to say that you’ve played for England is great and hopefully I’ll be able to get a few more Tests under my belt in the future.

“Things didn’t go so well for me at the back end of the season, so in many ways I feel like I’m starting again, but that’s really exciting. I see it as a massive opportunity.”

After the Lions tour it will be time for the dreaded pre-season, but Dom is looking forward to it. “I quite like pre-season,” he said. “I don’t mind getting in the gym or having a run and things like that. It’s all part of being a professional sportsman so you have to embrace it and get on with it.”

Was does Dom want to achieve next year?

“Hopefully a lot of wickets and a lot of runs! You never know what the future holds and I don’t want to say too much but obviously it’s an Ashes summer next year and that would be a life-long dream. I’ve just got to come back, work hard and make sure I’m playing.”

Dom was quick to praise the Somerset Members and fans after another year of tremendous support.

“The fans are always awesome down here,” he said. “They’re very passionate and it was great to be in amongst them on Finals Day. As players we are really grateful for the support that we get. They’re always behind us and that’s awesome.”
