George ready for World Cup Final

George Thomas and James Rew have both played a big role in helping England reach the Under 19 World Cup final.

The Young Lions take on India tomorrow (Saturday February 5th), with the winners being crowned World Champions.

Ahead of the big game, we spoke with George to discuss the dramatic semi-final win over Afghanistan and to look ahead to the final.

“The semi-final was a really tight game,” he said. “It swung both ways and at the halfway point we knew it was going to be really tough. We knew that we were going to have to defend that total well. We were confident, but we knew that we were going to have to work hard. Thankfully, the bowlers held their nerve and got us over the line.

“I was nervous fielding in the last few overs, but once we got over the line there was a lot of excitement.”

James Rew once again caught the eye with a spectacular catch, and as George explains, fielding is something that the team have been working on diligently.

“It was an unbelievable catch, and we were all buzzing about that after the game,” he explained. “Our fielding is something that we’ve been working really hard on. 50 overs is a long time to be in the field, but if you keep the intensity high and back the bowlers it can be really enjoyable.”

England will now take on India in the final.

“It’s a dream come true to be in a World Cup Final,” George said. “To be the best you have to beat the best and India are a very good side. We have to approach it as if it was just another game.

“There’s a lot of excitement in the group and I’m sure that there are a few nerves flying around, but if we can do our jobs and focus on that, then I back us 100% to be successful. It’s unbelievable to have the opportunity to play in a World Cup final and it would mean so much to bring the trophy home.

“We’ve been getting so many messages of support from everywhere, which is great. I’ve had messages from coaches that I worked with when I was eight telling me how proud they are of us, and that’s really heart-warming. I’ve had a huge amount of support and I’m so grateful for that.”
