George steers Somerset to victory over Worcestershire

George Bartlett top scored as Somerset kicked off our pre-season programme with a comfortable win over Worcestershire at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

Jack Brooks, Tim Groenewald, Eddie Byrom and Josh Davey also impressed as Somerset won the 50-over match by 132 runs.

After winning the toss, Worcestershire Captain, Brett D’Oliveira elected to bowl.

Somerset openers Steve Davies and Tom Banton put on 28 for the first wicket before the former was caught by Josh Dell off the bowling of Dillon Pennington for two.

Banton helped to move the score on to 80 but was caught and bowled by Pat Brown for 32.

James Hildreth and Bartlett then put on 76 for the third wicket, Hildreth was the man to go for 32 with Somerset on 156.

Bartlett fell shortly after to leave Somerset on 163 for four, but not before he had made an impressive 75. His runs came from 72 balls and included nine fours.

Eddie Byrom then contributed 42 from 44 balls whilst Roelof van der Merwe hit a rapid 31.

Craig Overton (21 from 22) and Groenewald, who hit a stunning 34 from just 15 balls, ensured that Somerset posted a strong total of 305 for eight.

Pennington was the most successful of the Worcester bowlers, claiming five for 52.

The Somerset bowlers made an early breakthrough when George Rhodes was caught by Davey off Overton for six. 16 for one soon became 28 for two when Brooks claimed his first wicket for his new County by bowling Tom Fell for eight.

Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals, and despite the best efforts of Ben Cox (65 from 64 balls), Worcestershire were dismissed for 173 from 39.6 overs.

The pick of the Somerset bowlers was Brooks who took three for 22. Davey also caught the eye with three for 32.
