Jack joins up with England

Somerset spinner Jack Leach has now joined up with the rest of the England Test squad ahead of the their three-match series in Sri Lanka.

Just before he departed we spoke to him about what he is expecting from the tour.

“I’m excited to be going out there and I just can’t wait to get started,” he said. “I can’t wait to play some cricket with the guys and hopefully win a Test series.

“I’ve been there before with the Lions, which is good because I know what to expect. It’s going to be very hot and humid despite all the rain they’ve had recently.

“We’ll be playing at some great venues and I’m looking forward to going to Galle because I’ve not been there before.”

Marcus Trescothick is a veteran of a number of tours to Sri Lanka. Did he give Jack any advice?

“I spoke to Marcus quite a bit when I went over there with the Lions,” said Jack. “He gave me some good advice and warned me that they can be a bit chirpy. He wasn’t wrong!”

Jack explained how he got his call up.

“I had a missed call on my phone,” he said. “It was from Ed Smith (England National Selector) so I thought I should probably call him back. I was hoping it was good news and it was! That was a really nice moment for me and I shared it with my mum and dad, my girlfriend and my brother. It was a really proud moment for me. Then it was announced to the public and it was incredible to get so many nice messages from friends, family and supporters.

“The support I get from Somerset fans is amazing and it’s something that really means a lot to me. I grew up being a Somerset fan, so I feel like I’m one of them. Their support is a real driving force for me when I’m playing and it really keeps me going.”

What does Jack hope to achieve this winter?

“I’d like to take at least 10 wickets in every match,” he joked. “For me it’s all about getting out there, training hard and just doing what I love doing. I have to go there and be myself and perform how I know I can. It’s also about learning as much as I can.

“The ultimate goal is to help England win a Test series in Sri Lanka, that has to be the main aim.”
