Jack preparing well for Sri Lanka series

Jack Leach is currently in Sri Lanka with the England squad preparing for the forthcoming Test series.

We spoke to him this week to see how he is faring overseas.

“Obviously, I’m very excited to be in the England squad and we’re all really excited to be out here,” he explained. “I think we feel very privileged and lucky to have the opportunity to be playing cricket at the moment. It’s a tough time for everyone at home, so we just hope that we can put some smiles on a few people’s faces.”

What does Jack think about the precautions that are in place in Sri Lanka?

“The Sri Lankan government have gone to impressive lengths to make sure that everyone is safe, and we’re of course very thankful for that. We were in isolation in our rooms for the first few days after we arrived, but since then we’ve had a few days of practice and I know that we were all pretty glad to be able to get outside. We had people delivering our food in has-mat suits which was a bit strange, but that just goes to show that every measure is being taken to make sure that everyone is as safe as possible.

“It’s exciting to be back training and we’re just about getting used to the heat now. We just can’t wait to get started now. The mood in the camp is really good and there’s a lot of energy around the guys.”

Jack was one of England’s standout performers in the Three Lions’ 3-0 series win in Sri Lanka in 2018, claiming 18 wickets and he certainly has fond memories of playing in the country.

“To be a part of a successful touring team is great and we were lucky enough to have been very successful over here a couple of years ago,” he said. “I’ve got really good memories of playing out here, but this is a completely new series and they’ll be looking to bounce back after what happened against South Africa. You always have to beware the wounded animal and we know that they’ll be a difficult prospect in their home conditions, and we know that we have to be ready for that.

“I’m looking to have a good week of preparation so that I can put myself in as good a place as possible. We’ve had a few practices so far and if it spins then that’s great and even if it doesn’t, I still feel like I can do a job for the team out here. I just need to make sure that I’m ready to go if selected.”

Jack also had a message for the Somerset Members and supporters.

“I’m so thankful for all the support that I’ve been getting from back home and the Somerset Members and supporters have always supported me. They’ve backed me since day one and I’m so grateful for that. I really hope that we can play some cricket in front of them this summer. I just want everyone to stay safe and hopefully we’ll see you all soon.”
