James Rew's World Cup Preview
England’s Under 19 squad get their World Cup campaign underway this weekend when they take on Bangladesh.
Somerset’s James Rew, Sonny Baker and George Thomas are all in the squad, and we caught up with James ahead of England’s opening fixture.
“Everyone’s really excited to get started,” he said when we spoke with him on Friday afternoon. “Our pre-World Cup tour to Sri Lanka went really well, the preparation has been good and we’re all looking forward to it.”
The Young Lions comprehensive warm up win over Papua New Guinea saw James’ Somerset colleague George Thomas open the batting and make 90.
“That was great to watch,” admitted James. “It was good to see a few guys, especially George, get some runs.”
How have the squad been approaching the competition?
“We have been focusing on what we need to do to win each game,” he explained. “Batting-wise we want to set a good platform for our innings with strong partnerships. That’s what happened in the warm up game, so hopefully we can take that forward into the tournament itself. Our bowling is in a really good position too.
“As a team we have a lot of confidence, and if we play at our best I feel that we’ve got a very good chance. Getting off to a good start will be important and we will need to make big scores.”
What does it mean to play in a World Cup?
“Obviously, it’s an extremely exciting opportunity, especially as the games are going to be on TV. To be able to play against the best players in the world is something special.
“Having Sonny and George over here has definitely been a big help for me, especially George because we’ve been playing together since we were really young. To be honest, the whole team is really close now and there’s a really good atmosphere.
“My goal is to help us win the tournament. I want to score as many runs as I can and to contribute to the team’s success.”
England’s first match is against Bangladesh, starting on Sunday at 1pm UK time. The game is being broadcast on Sky Sports Cricket.Back to News
