Jamie back from Spain and raring to go!

Somerset bowler Jamie Overton is now back with the rest of the squad at the Cooper Associates County Ground following his return from Spain.

As part of his rehabilitation from a stress fracture of the back, the 23-year-old was part of the England Pace Programme who headed out to Desert Springs recently for a winter training camp.

We caught up with him when he returned to Taunton late last week to see how the trip went. “It was really good,” he said. “It was great to get back to bowling off a full run up. I was able to run in at about 85% and the back feels absolutely fine. I’m really pleased with how it went and I’m excited for the start of the new season!”

“There was a good bunch of lads over there and it was good to share advice with the likes of Reece Topley and Toby Roland-Jones. Hopefully I can take a lot from the experience and add it to my game.”

What exactly did the winter camp involve? “It wasn’t massively different to what I’ve been doing here with Somerset,” said Jamie. “We’ve just been trying to increase my work-loads. I’ve also been working on my action a little bit. I’m just trying to land slightly differently and I can’t wait to try it out off a full run up at full speed.

“It was great to be able to get out on the grass over there, rather than being indoors. It makes a massive difference. Obviously, you play on grass during the season so to be able to practice on grass is ideal. You can’t beat practising outdoors.

“It’s been hard work over the last few months, but everything seems to be coming together nicely now and I feel like I’m in a good place. I feel really good and I just really want to play some cricket now!”
