Jamie enjoying life with the Lions

Jamie Overton has only recently returned from England Lions duty but the Somerset paceman, along with two of his County teammates, will once again be meeting up with the squad after being selected for the Lions tour of India which takes place in early 2019.

Jamie, Lewis Gregory and Dom Bess have once again all been included in the touring party after impressing on the recent tour of the UAE.

We spoke to Jamie this week and he was understandably pleased to have been selected.

“Obviously I’m delighted to have been named in the squad,” he said. “The recent tour was a good one for me and I felt like I was bowling quite nicely. I managed to get a few runs at the end of the trip too, which was nice. Hopefully I can now push on and do even better in India.

“The recent tour was tough because the pitches didn’t really offer a lot, but it was a good challenge. I think it helped that I was able to play in the different formats against Pakistan ‘A’. You have to challenge yourself to do well in those type of settings. There’s always that extra challenge knowing that you are playing against really good players who could well go on to represent their country soon. It’s great to be able to pit yourself against your counterparts from different countries.

“Towards the start of the tour I was doing well with the ball and I felt like I had a good rhythm. Towards the end I seemed to be doing better with the bat but in the last game it all seemed to come together nicely. Having played a lot of T20 cricket this year, I’ve been able to establish the role that I need to be playing for the team and that seems to be working at the moment.”

Jamie also enjoyed the fact that Craig, Lewis and Dom were out there with him.

“Obviously it was disappointing for Craig that he had to leave early, but having so many Somerset players there made it feel like home,” he said. “I was rooming with Bessie for the whole tour and it was nice to have a familiar face around the whole time. It was really good fun apart from his sleep-talking!

“It’s great that the three of us will be going to India as well. I’ve never been to India but I’ve heard that touring there can be tough and tiring, so it will be great to have some familiar faces around. I’m sure it’ll be a good tour and I know that there are some very good cricketers over there, so it will be good to see how we perform against them.”

What is Jamie expecting from the tour?

“It didn’t really spin in the UAE, so I’m expecting it to spin a bit more in India. We’re using a different ball over there as well. I’ve never bowled with an SG ball before, so that will be an interesting experience. I’ve got one in the dressing room and it feels a bit like a Duke which is good, but I don’t know if it will react like a Duke. It will certainly be interesting to see how that goes.”
