Jason backs Tom's decision to return home
It was announced this week that Tom Banton has been released from his Big Bash League contract by Brisbane Heat in order for the 22-year-old to return home.
Tom will return to the UK from South Africa where he has been with the England white-balls squads due to the demands of frequenting the numerous biosecure bubbles that he has been experiencing for the last few months.
Somerset CCC Head Coach, Jason Kerr has fully backed his player’s decision. “I think Tom’s made a really courageous decision to come home and spend some time with his family,” he said. “He’ll be returning home from South Africa shortly. He’s had quite a challenging summer and has been in various bubbles all over the world for quite a long time. He’s had a lot of time away from home and that has taken its toll.
“He’s taken stock and he feels that going in to yet another quarantine before the Big Bash wasn’t the right thing for him to do. It will have been a difficult decision for him to make, but I think it’s the right one.
“First and foremost, Tom is the most important part in the jigsaw. It’s not about the cricket, it’s about his wellbeing. That’s the most important thing and we’ll certainly be supporting him 100%.
“We’ve spoken with him and I think that he’s in better spirits now that he’s made his decision. You can only imagine the mental turmoil involved in trying to work out what’s the right thing to do. Ultimately, he’s made the right decision and I think he’s looking forward to spending Christmas at home.
“His health and wellbeing are far more important than anything else. He’s very young so he’s still got a huge amount of time left in the game to get more opportunities. He will only be able to maximise those opportunities if he’s in a good place both physically and mentally.
“We’ll be catching up with him before Christmas and hopefully he’ll pop in and see the boys, but I know he’s looking forward to spending some time with his family.”Back to News
