Jason reacts to 2021 fixtures
Last week saw the publication of the Vitality Blast and Royal London Cup fixtures.
After casting his expert eye over the schedule, Somerset Head Coach is looking forward to the start of the white-ball season.
“We just hope that when we start our white-ball campaigns later this summer there will be crowds in the ground creating that unbelievable atmosphere,” he said. “Whatever the format is, it will be extremely emotional for everybody when crowds are allowed back in.
“I think the Vitality Blast is going from strength to strength and the standard of cricket improves year on year. Essex were champions a few years ago, they’re a strong side and we’ve obviously been competing against them a lot recently. We’re looking forward to continuing that battle in a different format and I have no doubt that it will be an exciting game when we start our Vitality Blast season against them at home on June 9th.”
How does Jason feel about starting with three home games?
“If we are able to play in front of crowds, it will be fantastic,” he said. “We’re happy to have three home games at the start of the competition because we obviously know the ground incredibly well and we have great wickets here.
“We finish things off with a home game against Gloucestershire and everyone loves a local derby. Hopefully by the time we play them we will be in a strong position in the competition. Anyone can beat anyone in this format. Games can turn so quickly on a brilliant individual performance. Momentum is huge in this competition. If you can get on a role, that builds confidence so we will be looking to make a good start.”
Somerset begin the defence of the Royal London Cup in July and Jason is desperate for the team to successfully defend the trophy.
“Obviously, we didn’t get the chance to defend our Royal London Cup title last year and we are determined to retain the trophy,” he said. “It’s good to be starting with another home game and I think it’s good for everyone that there will be some slightly more unfamiliar fixtures. We saw some different four-day sides last year and this year we’ll be playing 50-over cricket against the likes of Derbyshire, Yorkshire and Leicestershire who we haven’t played in this format for quite a while.
“We certainly won’t be taking anyone for granted and given the timing of the tournament we will see a number of opportunities arising for some of our younger players. We saw last year how the likes of Tom Lammonby took their opportunity with both hands and I look forward to seeing who will step up this summer.”
