Jason ready for Desert Springs

The Somerset squad have been back at the Cooper Associates County Ground this week but as Assistant & Bowling Coach Jason Kerr explains, it is a short lived return.  “It’s an incredibly exciting time of year when everyone reports back but we’re not here for long,” he said.  “We’re very fortunate because we are heading out to Spain on Monday to go to Desert Springs for our pre-season camp.”

“First and foremost it’s a great facility and due to it’s remote location it will give us the chance to really bond.  We’ll be using the time to set some goals and some plans for the summer and it will be a great opportunity for Tom Abell to set out how he wants the team to operate.  The facilities out there are great so obviously we will be netting and doing a lot of fielding as we prepare for the start of the new season.”

As Jason explains, the time spent away from the practice nets will be equally as important to the squad.  “We’ll have quality time to sit down, discuss things and be really clear about how we are going to strategically approach the summer.  We’ll then start to implement that out on the grass out there.  We finished last year with great momentum and we’ll be looking to take that in to the first few games.  The feeling around the camp is brilliant at the moment and there is a real buzz about the place.

“Some of the guys have been away playing whilst some of the guys have been doing stuff indoors, so it’s a case of bringing everyone together and fine-tuning things over the next few weeks.  It’ll be fun for the bowlers because there’s always a little bit in the decks at this time of year which makes it challenging for the batters.  Due to the climate we always do a huge amount of practice indoors which is arguably completely alien to what we play on in the summer so the earlier that we can get that transition on to grass the better.”

Jason outlined what his main roles will be at Desert Springs.  “Myself and Matt will be looking in real detail at the summer ahead and I’ll be making sure that the bowlers are ready,” he said.  “We’ve got a really exciting group here at the moment and they’ve put a hell of a lot of work in over the winter.  I’m really looking forward to seeing them out on the grass.
