Lewis Goldsworthy joins the staff

It is with great pleasure that Somerset County Cricket Club can today reveal that Lewis Goldsworthy has signed a contract that will see him join the playing staff for at least the next two years.

The right-handed batsman, who is also a promising slow left-arm bowler, came through the Cornish pathway before joining the Somerset Academy in 2016 and first came to prominence after making 178 for the Somerset Under 17s against Surrey last summer.

The 18-year-old, who was educated at Millfield, has impressed for the Somerset Second XI this season, not least with an eye-catching half-century in the Trophy semi-final. Such exploits have gained him International recognition and he was one of the standout performers for England Under 19s this summer.

After completing the deal Somerset CCC Director of Cricket, Andy Hurry said: “Lewis is a player of undoubted potential.

“He transitioned seamlessly from Academy level to the Second XI, where he impressed on a number of occasions. His performances for the England Under 19s this summer against extremely strong opposition were also of the highest order.

“We are excited about working with Lewis over the next two years as he begins his journey into professional cricket.”

After signing his first contract for the Club, Lewis said: “It’s an unreal feeling to have signed for the club that I’ve grown up watching and supporting. I was speechless when I was offered the contract by Andy Hurry.

“The crowds in Taunton are unbelievable and the Club is well known for the support that it gets, so it would mean the world to me to make my debut for the First Team. Hopefully that will come around soon.

“Coming from Cornwall means that there’s been a lot of traveling, and a lot of people have put in a lot of effort and commitment to help me get to this stage so a big thank you has to go to them.

“Becoming a professional cricketer is something that I’ve wanted all my life, so hopefully I can make the most of this opportunity.”

Chris Hunkin, Performance Development Manager for Cornwall Cricket Board said: “Cornwall Cricket are delighted and extremely proud of Lewis signing his first contract with Somerset County Cricket Club.

“Lewis has played for Cornwall at every level from U10s through to the full senior team. He has always stood out as someone who possesses skill, physical ability and a quiet steely determination, but his continued hard work has got him to this point in his development.

“There will be many cricket supporters in Cornwall wishing Lewis well for the next stage in his journey.”
