Lewis reflects on his season so far
Lewis Gregory seems to enjoy playing for Somerset at Lord’s.
The Home of Cricket is where he hit his maiden First Class century in the recent game against Middlesex and back in August 2013 the 25 year old claimed his first Championship five wicket haul, which included former Somerset captain Chris Rogers.
Lewis was back in Taunton this week when we caught up with him to talk about his recent achievement.
“It felt pretty good to get my first Championship century for Somerset at Lord’s,” he said. “It’s been a pretty good venue for me as I took my first five-for there a few years ago. At 80 for five we were in a bit of trouble last week against Middlesex, but as I walked down the steps I thought about a chat I’d had with Jason Kerr. We talked about trying to be the person who influences the game, so that was on my mind. As I walked out there I thought I’d try to be the guy who changed the game.
“Deano was really good out there. He was a calming influence on me and was talking a lot. We talked about trying to build a partnership as best we could and we managed to keep on going and built a good one that, in the end, helped to save the game.
“It was nice to be able to help to dig the side out when we were under a bit of pressure. Then the boys fought hard on a slow-ish wicket where the ball did a little bit.”
“I’ve always known that I was a batsman and it’s shown at times. I’ve worked very hard on that part of my game over the last few weeks so it’s great that it’s paid off. I’ve been needing some runs so it’s nice to have done it at Lord’s and hopefully I can kick on and become consistent with the bat and score runs heavily for the team moving forward.”
Talking about his recent back injury Lewis said: “My back is better than it was. It’s going to be monitored to let me play as much of this season as possible.”
Looking forward to the Yorkshire game Lewis said: “I’d like very much to be playing on Friday, but its been a long couple of weeks with four day cricket so we will have to see how things are after a couple of days.”Back to News
