Lewis signs contract extension
Somerset Members and supporters have received another major boost today after it was revealed that Lewis Gregory has signed a one-year contract extension with the County.
The 27-year-old’s current deal isn’t due to expire until the end of the 2021 season, but the Club have moved to secure his services for at least a further 12 months.
Lewis, who is from Plymouth and played his way through the Devon age groups as well as representing the senior Devon side, joined the County after graduating from the Somerset Academy in 2010. He went on to make his First XI debut against Pakistan in September of that year.
A former England Under 19 Captain, Lewis was called into the England ODI squad in 2015. He was named in the England Test squad for this summer’s clash against Ireland and his consistently impressive performances throughout 2019 have been rewarded with a place on England’s IT20 tour of New Zealand this winter.
2019 was another outstanding season for Lewis in the Specsavers County Championship during which he claimed 51 wickets at an average of 15.76.
Lewis was also a key member of Somerset’s Royal London One-Day Cup winning side. He featured in all 11 fixtures, scoring over 280 runs at a strike rate of 141.38 and taking 10 wickets. He also topped Somerset’s bowling averages in the Vitality Blast.
After committing his future to Somerset, Lewis said: “It’s a really exciting time for the Club and I’m delighted to have committed my future to Somerset because it’s the Club that I love.
“To win a trophy with this group of players was incredibly special and hopefully that will be the first of many.
“Over the last few weeks we’ve seen the majority of our young players signing new contracts, which is great for the future of the Club and I’m thrilled that I’m going to be able to play a part in that. The Club is on the verge of something special and I’m really looking forward to seeing what we can achieve in the next few years.”
Somerset Director of Cricket, Andy Hurry is delighted that the Club’s Vitality Blast Captain has extended his commitment at the Cooper Associates County Ground.
“Lewis has been one of our most consistently impressive performers across all three formats over the last few years,” he said. “He is an outstanding player, a genuine leader and his contributions on the field have won us a number of matches. His exceptional performances have rightly been rewarded with an International call up this winter.
“There is no doubt about it; Lewis is an all rounder of genuine quality and everyone associated with the Club is delighted that he has signed this extension.”Back to News
