Max eyes the quarter-finals

Max Waller was once again very much to the fore on Saturday night when Somerset bounced back to winning ways with a 25-run victory over Glamorgan in front of a sell out at the Cooper Associates County Ground.

On the night the leg spinner bowled his four overs for just 19 runs and claimed three wickets, bringing his tally to 13 wickets in this years Vitality Blast. He now has 124 wickets for the County in T20 cricket, a number that is only bettered by Alfonso Thomas with 137.

Talking about his three for 19 on Saturday evening, Max said: “I like to think that I’m pretty consistent now and have been for the last few years.  It’s obviously pleasing to get rewards like that and those figures are very good at Taunton, so I’m very pleased with that.”

Looking ahead to Somerset’s final two group stage matches Max said: “Every result is crucial going towards the quarter-finals and it would be lovely to win both of our last two matches.

“Each game is important to us, so we will be taking every game as it comes. On Tuesday we have a crucial game at the Oval where there is always a fantastic atmosphere, and I am really looking forward to that.”

What does he attribute his continued success in this format of the game to?

“I think it’s down to a lot experience really,” he said. “I’ve played a lot of T20 cricket now and I’ve bowled my overs in slightly different places in the innings this season. Bowling the first over gets me into the game nicely, which I enjoy doing.”

On Saturday evening the match was played on a hybrid wicket, so how did Max find that?

“I don’t think I approached it any differently,” he said. “I think a couple did grip a bit more and held up early on, so I was quite excited about it after that first over.”

Has Max added anything to his armoury this year?

“I actually bowled a knuckle ball tonight which is fairly unusual for me. I’ve been working on it a lot for the past 18 months or so, but this is the first time that it’s come out in a game well for me. I’m really pleased with it, so hopefully I can use it again.”

Finally, Max paid tribute to the Somerset fans.

“Once again it was great under the lights, which have been a really good addition. The games can start later and that brings the crowds in who create a brilliant atmosphere. It’s great to play in front of the Members and fans here.”
