Nation County Preview: Somerset v Cornwall

Somerset welcome Cornwall to the Cooper Associates County Ground tomorrow (Tuesday) for a 50-over National County fixture.

Play is due to get underway at 11am.

Tickets are still available for this fixture, priced £10 for adults and £5 for juniors. These can be purchased on the St James Street gates.

You can keep up to date with the match via our Match Centre and on our Twitter feed.

An enhanced live stream will be available for fans to watch via this website and our YouTube channel.

In addition to this, a report on the day’s play, along with quotes, will be posted after the close.

The last time the two sides met in 50-over cricket was at Taunton in 2007. Somerset won the match by 209 runs.

Batting first, Somerset posted 360 for four from their allotted overs. Sam Spurway made 116 not out and Craig Kieswetter was unbeaten on 100. Matt Wood contributed 55.

The Cornwall side, which featured the likes of Carl Gazzard, Neil Edwards and Michael Munday, were dismissed for 151 from 40.5 overs. Tom Sharpe top scored with 49 whilst Steffan Jones claimed four for six from seven overs.

Somerset will be without a number of players who are involved in The Hundred and Ollie Sale is still on the injury list. However, exciting young players Sonny Baker and James Rew have been added to the 2021 Royal London Cup squad.

Both made their debuts for the County in this year’s pre-season friendlies, and their form for the Second XI so far this summer has been rewarded with a call up to the First XI squad for the 50-over competition.

18-year-old right-arm fast bowler Sonny, who plays his club cricket at Torquay Cricket Club, progressed through the Devon Age group system. He made his National Counties debut for Devon in 2020 and his Somerset 2nd Xl debut in 2019. He joined the Somerset Academy in 2020.

Wicketkeeper/batsman James, who plays his club cricket for Taunton St Andrews, is 17 years old and joined the Academy in 2019 after playing his way through the Somerset age group system and the Emerging Player Programme. He made his Second XI debut in 2019 when he was 15.

Both attend Kings College, Taunton.

SCCC Royal London Cup Head Coach, Paul Tweddle will be without James Rew for this match because he is representing the County Select XI against India at Emirates Durham. However, Academy Members Jamie Baird and George Thomas have been added to the squad for this fixture.

Somerset have named the following squad: Ben Green, Kasey Aldridge, Jamie Baird, Sonny Baker, George Bartlett, Eddie Byrom, Josh Davey, Lewis Goldsworthy, Jack Leach, Ned Leonard, George Thomas and Sam Young.

The Cornwall squad is as follows: Scott Harvey, Oliver Westbury, Craig Johnson, Tommy Sturgess, Kian Burns, Charlie Kent, Scott Kellow, Ben Ellis, Rob Mutch, Ellis Whiteford, Paul Smith and Joel Brierley.

Ahead of the game, Paul Tweddle said: “There’s a great atmosphere in the camp and we can’t wait to get going in the Royal London Cup. This match against Cornwall will give the players the chance to play some competitive 50-over cricket ahead of Sunday.

“Cornwall are bringing a strong side and it is a privilege to be playing a competitive match against one of our National County partners at the Cooper Associates County Ground.

“It’s a very exciting opportunity to see players like Sonny and James, who have huge potential, come into the environment. They’ve both demonstrated high-quality performances and strong character traits in their cricket to date, and it has been great to welcome them into the squad.

“We have also added Jamie and George to the squad for this match. They have shown what they are capable of during their time on the Academy and for the Second XI, and this is a good opportunity for them.

“There is a real buzz around the competition and I can’t wait to see this squad show what they can do.”
