Paul looks back on his Canada success
Paul van Meekeren returned to the Cooper Associates County Ground this week after an eventful few weeks in Canada.
The 26-year-old played a big part as the Winnipeg Hawks lifted the Global T20 Canada tournament.
Paul claimed two wickets in a dramatic final as the Hawks overcame Vancouver Knights in a super over to win the competition.
“It was a great experience,” he said upon his return to Taunton. “It was made even better because we won the whole tournament. We had a bit of luck along the way but we also played some really good cricket at times.
“It took me a few games to warm up and I missed out on a couple of games because you can only play five full member players and there has to be a certain number of local guys in the side, but I had a good run towards the end. Things then came good for me in the final.
“A lot of the big name players were involved in the tournament. The likes of Gayle, Russell and Wahab Riaz were involved and it was a pretty star-studded competition. It was great to be able to spend some time with those guys off the field and tap in to their knowledge of the game and learn from them.
“The atmosphere around the whole competition was great, the cricket was awesome and the people were amazing. It was great to win it but it was also great to meet a lot of new people.
“Cricket is the fastest growing sport in Canada at the moment apparently. There is a large Asian community and there are a lot of people from the Caribbean living over there too. The fans were very passionate about the game and there were quite a lot of them waiting for the players at the hotels each night.”
