Players make special visit to Musgrove Park

Several Somerset players and Head Coach Jason Kerr made a special visit to Musgrove Park Hospital this week.

Jason was joined by Tom Abell, Max Waller, Roelof van der Merwe, Tom Lammonby, Ben Green, Ollie Sale and Ned Leonard and they delivered several bags of toys to the Children’s Ward in a bid to help spread some Christmas cheer.

This is an annual initiative which usually sees the players, coaches and our mascot Stumpy visit the Children’s Wards ahead of Christmas to meet the children and hand out gifts. Due to the current restrictions that are in place it wasn’t possible for the Somerset contingent to enter the building this year, but they all felt that it was important to keep the tradition alive.

Following the visit, Jason Kerr said: “It’s been a tough year for a lot of people, and this is one of the days that I really look forward to. Normally we get the opportunity to go around the hospital and see the children who are in the unfortunate position of being in hospital at this time of the year, but for obvious reasons that’s not something that we can do at the moment. To see so many of the players here today just goes to show what this event means to us. Hopefully these gifts will help to put a smile on some children’s faces over the next few weeks.”

Club Captain, Tom Abell emphasised the importance of this annual event. “This is a really important initiative and it’s always an inspiring visit,” he said. “With the current situation, it’s been a little bit different this year but hopefully the presents will help to spread a little bit of festive cheer. It was nice to be able to meet a few of the staff who work so hard on the wards too.”

Play Specialist at Musgrove Park Hospital, Jane Horne was delighted that the players came to visit. “It’s been different this year, but it was really nice to see the players again,” she said. “We really look forward to the Cricket Club coming every year and it’s really nice that the players could come this year. I’d like to thank the Club for the gifts and for thinking of us.”
