Pre-Season: Somerset beat Essex in 45-over match
Somerset continued their good pre-season form with a 17-run win over Essex in a 45-over per side red-ball match at the Zayed Cricket Stadium today.
Essex won the toss and elected to field.
Somerset finished on 159 for seven from our allotted overs.
Tom Banton top scored with 60.
After 25 overs of their reply, Essex were 91 for three.
With 10 overs to go, Essex are 110 for five, requiring a further 50 runs.
Essex eventually finished on 142 for five.
Jack Brooks was the pick of the Somerset attack with two for 12 from his six overs whilst Roelof van der Merwe claimed one for 14 from nine overs.
Following the match, Somerset Head Coach, Jason Kerr said: “I thought the guys were outstanding today. It can be difficult when you play a format that you’re not used to, especially when you’re condensing four-day cricket into 45 overs.
“We were asked to bat first, so there was something there for the new ball, but it was great to see Ben Green and Tom Lammonby spend so much time at the crease. It wasn’t so much about posting a score, it was about implementing what we’ve been doing over the winter.
“Jack Brooks was excellent with the new ball, but the most pleasing thing for me was our attitude. It was very hot out there today, but we showed an incredible work ethic and the usual high level of commitment.
“Tomorrow will be an active recovery day, and then we’ve got a two-day red-ball game starting on Tuesday. We are now looking for the players to maximise their opportunities and spend as much time in the middle as they can.”
The Somerset 13 for the match is: Tom Lammonby, Ben Green, James Hildreth, Tom Banton, George Bartlett, Lewis Goldsworthy, Steve Davies, Lewis Gregory, Roelof van der Merwe, Kasey Aldridge, Jack Brooks, Ned Leonard and Tom Abell (bowling only).Back to News
