Roelof commits himself to Somerset

Somerset County Cricket Club are pleased to be able to announce that Netherlands International all-rounder Roelof van der Merwe has committed his future to the Club.

The 34-year-old, whose current deal was due to expire this winter, has signed a new two-year contract extension with the Club which will see him remain at the Cooper Associates County Ground until at least the end of the 2021 season.

Roelof initially joined Somerset on a short-term contract in 2011 before returning in 2016. During his time with the Club he has made a big impression both on and off the field and has contributed a number of match winning performances with both the bat and the ball.

His consistently impressive performances for the Club, alongside his outstanding attitude off the field of play, saw him awarded his County Cap in 2018.

One of the highlights of Roelof’s time with Somerset was a match winning 165 not out in the 2017 Royal London One-Day Cup match against Surrey in Taunton. That innings broke the record for the highest score by a Somerset player in a 50-over match and his partnership with Dean Elgar was a sixth wicket record for the County in List A matches.

He was also an integral element of Somerset’s Royal London One-Day Cup triumph earlier this year.

After signing his contract extension Roelof said: “I’m absolutely delighted for this opportunity to be a part of the Somerset family for another two years. I love playing for this Club and I’m really looking forward to playing cricket in front of amazing home support that we get every week.

“I hope that I can continue to contribute to more team success over the next couple of seasons.”

Somerset Director of Cricket, Andy Hurry said: “Roelof played a huge part in this season’s Royal London One-Day Cup victory and his performances have more than warranted this extension.

“He is a match winner with both bat and ball whilst his energy and enthusiasm in the field have been a real driving force behind our success over the last few years.

“The young players coming into the squad will learn a huge amount from Roelof because he is an outstanding team-man and epitomises everything that this Club is about both on and off the field.”
