Roelof to remain with Somerset

Somerset County Cricket Club are pleased to reveal that Roelof van der Merwe has agreed a one-year contract extension that will see him continue to represent the Club until at least the end of the 2022 season.

Roelof’s first experience of Somerset came in 2011 when he joined the Club on a short-term contract. He returned in 2016 and since then has become a vital member of the First XI squad across all three formats of the game.

In his time at Somerset, the 36-year-old’s multi-format skills have seen him score over 2100 runs, claim more than 150 wickets and take over 80 catches.

One of the highlights of Roelof’s time with Somerset was a match winning 165 not out in the 2017 Royal London One-Day Cup match against Surrey in Taunton. That innings broke the record for the highest score by a Somerset player in a 50-over match.

These impressive performances saw him awarded with his County Cap in 2018, and he was a key part of Somerset’s Royal London One-Day Cup winning side of 2019.

Roelof, who has also played for Taunton Deane CC, is one of the leading lights in the Club’s award-winning Community Engagement Programme.

After committing his future to Somerset, the all rounder, who has played international cricket for South Africa and the Netherlands said: “It goes without saying that I’m delighted to be staying at Somerset. Somerset is my home and I have loved every minute of my time here.

“We have a great squad and I’m really excited to see what we can achieve as a group. This is a very exciting time for the Club and there is a real chance that we can add to the trophy that we won in 2019.

“I know it is a tough time for people at the moment and we hope that we can put some smiles on people’s faces this summer by being successful on the field. We also hope that we will see our Members and supporters back in the Cooper Associates County Ground soon because it just isn’t the same without them.”

Somerset CCC Director of Cricket, Andy Hurry said: “We are extremely pleased to have secured the services of a player of Roelof’s calibre for the next two seasons. His performances on the field speak for themselves, and the way he conducts himself off the field is credit to him and the Club.

“The energy and enthusiasm that he brings to everything that he does is exceptional, and he is a great role model for the younger players within the squad.

“I am also pleased to be able to confirm that we are able to register Roelof as a local player.”
