SCCC Club Watch - Week 1
In a new regular feature piece, Benjamin Redwood will update supporters on how Somerset players have fared for their respective club sides across the West Country.
With league cricket making its long-awaited return to the West Country this weekend, some of the Somerset first team squad and Academy players were in action for their club sides this weekend. The coronavirus pandemic severely impacted recreational cricket proceedings for the 2020 season.
First Team Squad
Youngster Will Smeed smashed Bridgwater to a five-wicket victory over Potterne in the West of England Premier League First Division. Smeed struck 150 off of 101 deliveries as Bridgwater chased the target of 304 in less than 42 overs. Ned Leonard further featured for Bridgwater claiming 1-46 off his nine overs.
In the Tolchards Devon League, Ben Green opened the batting for Exeter CC – scoring 19 as his side made 147 from 33 overs in a rain affected game. Sandford’s chase only lasted 3.5 overs before the rain halted proceedings as the game was eventually abandoned.
Sonny Baker bowled four overs, taking no wickets for six runs for Torquay CC as they defeated Abbotskerswell CC in the Devon Cricket League A Division. After amassing 226/7 in a rain affected game, the South Devon outfit skittled Abbotskerswell for 89.
Batsman Sam Young scored eight for Bath CC as they lost by 53 runs to Clevedon CC in another rain affected fixture. Bath were given a revised target of 211 from 31 overs. However, the North East Somerset side could only amass a total of 157/7 in response to Clevedon’s first innings score of 266/8.
In the Cornwall Cricket League, Max Waller scored 74 for St Just CC in their comprehensive six wicket victory over Wadebridge CC in the Premier T20 tournament. Wadebridge amassed 155/5 off their allotted 20 overs. Waller finished with figures of 0-23 from his four overs.
The weekend further allowed academy starlets a chance to hone their skills at a competitive level.
Charlie Sharland top scored for Taunton Deane CC as they lost by 113 runs to Cheltenham CC in their return to the topflight of the West of England Premier League Premier Division. Jamie Baird further scored eight and kept wicket for the Deane.
In the WEPL Premier 2 Bristol/Somerset Division, Taunton St Andrews CC beat Bishopston CC by 91 runs at the Wyvern Club. James Rew hit 75 before he was run out as St. Andrews amassed 321/7 off their allotted 45 overs. Academy starlets George and Josh Thomas also played for St Andrews. George Thomas scored 30 not out and impressively took 4-21 off of 5.5 overs. Josh Thomas took 1-32 from his six overs, scoring 8 with the bat.
