Siddle and Renshaw looking forward to Royal London Cup

Matt Renshaw and Peter Siddle have both already made a big impact for Somerset this season and the Australian pair will be looking to make similar headlines when they line up for the County in the Royal London Cup later this summer.

We caught up with them both earlier this week to discuss the 50-over competition and asked them if it’s a format that they enjoy.

Peter Siddle: “50-over cricket is a format that I like. I didn’t play a lot of it throughout my Test career because I was focused on red-ball cricket during that time. Since I’ve retired from international cricket it’s been fun playing in the shorter forms of the game and I’ve loved it. I’ve played quite a bit of white-ball cricket for Tasmania and I’ve had a bit of success, so hopefully I can bring some of that form here to Somerset.”

Matt Renshaw: “I love playing 50-over cricket. I played a lot of four-day cricket growing up but getting into the one-day game was always something that I wanted to achieve. I’ve had a bit of success in the last few years over in Queensland.

Will they be looking to help nurture the young talent that will be a part of this year’s Royal London Cup squad?

PS: “I’d like to think that I do that in all formats, but this year there will be a few more opportunities for the young guys during the Royal London Cup. I’m looking forward to working with those players and helping them out. We get great crowds here and the experience that they’ll gain from playing in front of so many people will be really good for them. I’ll certainly be looking to help those guys along the way, and if they push me out of the team by the end of the tournament and come through and start performing for Somerset that would be great. Hopefully I can take a few wickets at the start and maybe some of the young guys will overtake me by the end. If that happens, I’ll still be here cheering them on.”

MR: “I’m really excited by both the young bowlers and the young batting group that’s coming through. There’s a lot of potential there and we’ll have a really exciting one-day team again this year. I’m looking forward to being a leader for the batting group in one-day cricket. I’ve been a lot more confident in my one-day game over the last couple of years and I really feel like I can help the younger guys out in the format.”

Are they looking forward to playing in front of big crowds in 50-over cricket in Taunton?

MR: “I’ve played 50-over cricket for Somerset in the competition before, so I know what it’s all about and how much it means to the supporters. It’s exciting for us to play in front of big crowds at the Cooper Associates County Ground. To come here and get a pretty full crowd is nice, especially for some of the young guys who won’t have experienced that too much before.”

PS: “I’ve been lucky enough to play against Somerset in white-ball cricket, and the support that Somerset get is amazing. It’s going to be great now that I’m playing as a local rather than for the opposition!”
