Somerset players selected in PSL draft
Tom Abell, Lewis Gregory and Tom Banton have been selected to play in this year’s Pakistan Premier League.
The draft took place in Lahore this weekend and during the event the six franchises selected their squads for the sixth edition of the competition.
Club Captain, Tom Abell was a silver pick for last season’s runners up the Lahore Qalandars. He is joined in the squad by the likes of Fakhar Zaman, Mohammad Hafeez, Joe Denly, Ben Dunk, Samit Patel, David Wiese, Rashid Khan and Shaheen Afridi.
Vitality Blast Captain, Lewis Gregory was a diamond level pick for Islamabad United who won the tournament in 2016 and 2018. Lewis will line up with Alex Hales, Hasan Ali, Colin Munro, Faheem Ashraf, Shadab Khan and Chris Jordon.
Tom Banton was selected by 2019 winners Quetta Gladiators at the platinum level and he will be playing alongside former Somerset T20 batsman Chris Gayle, Dale Steyn, Ben Cutting, Mohammad Hasnain, Mohammad Nawaz, Sarfaraz Ahmed and Cameron Delport.
Following the draw, Somerset Head Coach, Jason Kerr said: “It’s great to see three of our players get this recognition and with it the opportunity to broaden their cricketing horizons.
“To be able to play with and against some of the best players in the world in different conditions is a fantastic opportunity for them. In turn the Club will benefit from them returning having had those experiences. For them to be able to have high level competitive cricket during that period can only be a good thing.
“Obviously, the safety of the players is paramount and I’m sure that they will be doing everything that they can in Pakistan to ensure the safety of the players, staff and everyone involved in the tournament.”
The Pakistan Super League will begin on February 20th with Tom Banton’s Quetta Gladiators taking on reigning champions Karachi Kings. The final will take place on March 22nd.Back to News
