Specsavers County Championship Preview: Yorkshire v Somerset


Somerset return to Specsavers County Championship action tomorrow (Wednesday) when we travel to Emerald Headingley to take on Yorkshire.

Somerset are currently second in Division One with 141 points from nine matches whilst Yorkshire are sixth in table with 88 points from nine matches.

The two sides have played against each other in the County Championship on 176 occasions. Somerset have won 25 of the matches to Yorkshire’s 91 whilst 60 have been drawn.

The highest total for Somerset in the series is 630 at Headingley in 1901, while for Yorkshire it’s 589 for five at Bath in 2001.

The highest innings by a Somerset batsman is 297 by Matt Wood at Taunton in 2006 and for Yorkshire it is 213 by Herbert Sutcliffe in 1924 at Dewsbury.

The best bowling in an innings for Somerset is nine for 41 by Len Braund in 1902 at Sheffield and for Yorkshire it is 10 for 35 by Alonzo Drake at Weston-super-Mare in 1914.

The best match figures for Somerset are 14 for 70 by Coote Hedley in 1895 at Headingley and for Yorkshire it’s Alonzo Drake with 15 for 51 at Weston-super-Mare in 1914.

When the two sides met at the Cooper Associates County Ground back in April, Somerset made 216 all out after being put into bat. Matt Renshaw hit 112 and George Bartlett 39, while Jack Brooks claimed five for 57.

In reply Yorkshire were bowled out for 96 as Lewis Gregory and Tim Groenewald took three wickets each.

Batting for a second time Somerset were bowled out for 200 as Tom Abell top scored with 82.

Chasing 321 for victory Yorkshire were all out for 202, leaving Somerset the winners by 118 runs.


Somerset are still without the services of Tim Groenewald (groin), although the seamer is making good progress and has started bowling again. Head Coach Jason Kerr has named the following squad: Tom Abell, Azhar Ali, Dom Bess, Eddie Byrom, Josh Davey, Steve Davies, Lewis Gregory, James Hildreth, Jack Leach, Craig Overton, Jamie Overton, Peter Trego, Marcus Trescothick and Max Waller.

Looking ahead to the match Head Coach, Jason Kerr said: “Headingley is always a difficult place to play but we are looking forward to it on the back of a victory over Essex. We showed a lot of character and skill on the final day of that match and if we can deliver that at Headingley over the four days then I am sure we will get the right result.”
