Tom all set for a busy Winter
Tom Banton was back in Taunton for a few days earlier this week, making his final preparations before flying out to New Zealand ahead of the five match T20 series that starts on November 1st.
It has been an amazing season for the 20-year-old at the end of which he won Somerset’s White-Ball Player of the Year Award. He was also named the PCA Young Cricketer of the Year, won the coveted Cricket Writers Club Young Cricketer of the Year Award and has been selected as part of the England T20 squad to play against New Zealand this autumn.
In addition, Tom has been named as the Local Icon player for the Welsh Fire team in The Hundred in 2020, as well as being signed up to play for Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash: quite an achievement for a youngster in only his second year as a full time cricketer.
“I’ve been at home with my family trying to relax after a busy week in London following the end of the season,” he said when we spoke to him this week. “It’s been good to get away and not think too much about cricket. Now I’ve been back in Taunton for a few days where I have spent some time in the gym and had one training session, so its been good to be back.”
It has all happened so quickly, as Tom reflected: “This time last year I flew out to Perth to spend a winter playing cricket and I didn’t really know what was going to happen. To be honest, I wasn’t very good in Perth but I came back and started well with the white-ball stuff. Since then, I haven’t really looked back. It’s all happened so quickly.
“I’ve had all of my England kit delivered, which has been really exciting. I’m not trying to think about it too much, although I know I could be playing for my country.
“I’m also really excited to have signed up for the Big Bash out in Australia, playing for Brisbane Heat. I’ve been in touch with a few of their guys including Matt Renshaw, who I know quite well. I fly out there on December 9th and I’ll be there for just over one month.
Tom added: “It’s a big winter ahead and there could be even more to come, which is really very exciting for me.”Back to News
