Tom Heading for the IPL
Tom Banton will join up with Kolkata Knight Riders for the 2020 IPL at the conclusion of England’s ODI series against Australia later this month.
The tournament begins on September 19th with KKR beginning their campaign against Mumbai Indians on September 23rd.
The 21-year-old was bought by the Knight Riders for his base price of INR 1 Crore at the original player auction at the end of 2019.
Ahead of the tournament, Tom said: “I’m really looking forward to playing in the IPL. The chance to play with and against the best players on the planet is something that doesn’t come along too often, so it’s an opportunity that I want to grab with both hands.
“There was a time when it looked like we weren’t going to be playing any cricket at all, so to have represented my country and to now be heading to Abu Dhabi for the IPL is fantastic.
“Obviously, there are more important things going on in the world at the moment and hopefully through sport we can put a smile on peoples faces during these difficult times.
“I’ve been in regular contact with the Somerset squad and it’s brilliant that we’ve made the final of the Bob Willis Trophy. I will definitely be keeping a close eye on what’s happening!”
Somerset Director of Cricket, Andy Hurry said: “This is an incredible opportunity for Tom. It goes without saying that we would love to see him in a Somerset shirt for the last few matches of the season, but there is no doubt that this experience will be of benefit to him both on and off the field.
“Working day in and day out under the guidance of Brendon McCullum and alongside the likes of Eoin Morgan, Pat Cummins and Andre Russell will accelerate his development, which will in turn be of benefit to Somerset.”Back to News
