Tom honoured to receive Lions captaincy

It was announced earlier this week that Club Captain, Tom Abell would be captaining the England Lions in their two matches against South Africa next week.

We spoke with him earlier today to get his reaction.

“It’s a huge honour,” he said. “It’s come as a bit of a surprise though, if I’m honest. I don’t feel like I’ve quite hit my straps in white-ball cricket this year, but I’m absolutely thrilled to be considered. To have been given the captaincy is a huge privilege for me. Obviously, I’m disappointed to be missing the Lancashire game, but I’m incredibly proud to get the opportunity to lead the England Lions. I’m looking forward to the two games and hopefully I can put my best foot forward.”

Tom is joined in the squad by Tom Banton and Will Smeed, about which he said: “One of the biggest strengths of this Club is the Pathway and the players that we nurture and bring through. It’s very special to have the other Somerset players involved. I’m thrilled that Bants and Smeedy are going to be involved and of course Adam Hose used to play here too. Having some close friends in the squad makes it even more special.

“It’s a massive opportunity for all of us and it will be a great challenge to come up against the South Africa side. We all know what Tom and Will are capable of. They’re supreme talents who put bums on seats, that’s for sure! They are extremely talented and hopefully they can show everyone what they’re capable of in a Lions shirt next week.”

The first match in the series will be held at the Cooper Associates County Ground on Tuesday. What will it mean to Tom to captain the Lions at his home ground?

“To captain the Lions will be incredibly special, but to be able to do that here is amazing. It’s going to be a real test for us all against international opposition, but the dream is to be able to play at the very top level and we will find out things about ourselves when we come up against the quality of players that we’ll be facing in these games.”
