Tom excited by PSL opportunity
Tom Abell was one of three Somerset players who were picked in the draft for the Pakistan Super League recently.
Somerset’s Club Captain was a silver pick for last season’s runners up the Lahore Qalandars and he will be playing alsongside the likes of Fakhar Zaman, Mohammad Hafeez, Joe Denly, Ben Dunk, Samit Patel, David Wiese, Rashid Khan and Shaheen Afridi.
We spoke to him this week and asked how it felt to be selected for such a prestigious tournament.
“It’s a great opportunity and I think I was as surprised as anyone,” he joked. “Obviously, I’m absolutely delighted to have been picked for what is a great competition. I would absolutely love to be able to experience playing cricket in Pakistan. I’ve had the pleasure of playing with Azhar Ali and Babar Azam over the last few years, and you get a sense from those guys just how fanatical people are about cricket in that part of the world.
“It would be a great experience and a great opportunity for me at this stage of my career. To be able to test yourself in different conditions against world class players and teams is what you want to be doing. It was a bit of a surprise if I’m honest, but I’m absolutely over the moon to be joining Tom Banton and Lewis Gregory over there.
“You look at the names and the quality of the players right throughout the competition and to have the chance to be a part of that is huge. As a player you always have ambitions to make that next step. I have ambitions of playing for England and I want to be testing myself against the best players and teams in the world. Hopefully, this will present me with the opportunity to do that.”
Tom was quick to thank the Somerset coaching staff for the role that they have played in helping him get to this stage in his career.
“The dynamic of cricket is always changing and there are now big competitions all over the world throughout the year and that can only be good for us as players,” he said. “But if it wasn’t for the people behind the scenes at Somerset who do so much for us, we wouldn’t be where we are. They put so much effort into us to give us these sorts of opportunities and they don’t always get the credit that they deserve.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of them, and they know who they are. It’s not just about the three of us who have been selected for the PSL. There’s so much talent at the Club and I’m sure that we will continue to see our guys getting international recognition and getting selected for tournaments like this. We are the lucky ones this time, but I have no doubt that some of the other guys will get similar opportunities in the near future.”
Tom also had a message for the Somerset faithful.
“I hope that everyone is keeping safe and well. We all know how much cricket means to our Members and supporters and we really hope that we will see them back at the Cooper Associates County Ground soon. The priority has to be making sure that everyone is safe, and we’ve all got our fingers crossed. With the vaccines being rolled out now, hopefully we will see everyone back in Taunton in the summer. It just wasn’t the same last year. As Somerset players we want to be performing for our Members and supporters.”Back to News
