Tom selected for England ODI series

Tom Banton has been named by the England National Cricket Selectors in the 16-strong squad for the three-match ODI series in South Africa.

It is the first time that the 21-year-old, who was named the PCA Young Player of the Year this year, has been named in the England ODI set up.

The series will begin on February 4th in Cape Town.

The selectors have also announced a 16-strong squad for the three-match IT20 series against the Proteas, starting on February 12th in East London.

This will be the first time that England have played in the 50-over format since their memorable ICC Men’s World Cup triumph in July. Eight players remain from the World Cup squad.

Tom is joined in the ODI squad by fellow first timers Pat Brown (Worcestershire) and the Lancashire duo of Matthew Parkinson and Saqib Mahmood.

Jofra Archer, Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, and Mark Wood are rested for the ODIs, but return for the IT20s.

Commenting on the selection of the squad, National Selector Ed Smith, said: “These two squads were selected with an eye on the T20 World Cup in Australia in 2020. In the T20s, a number of players who were rested for the successful 3-2 victory in New Zealand return to the squad.

“We want to expand the pool of players who can perform successfully for England, while also helping the team to peak for major tournaments.”
