Vitality Blast Preview: Sussex Sharks v Somerset


Somerset are in Vitality Blast action once again tomorrow (Sunday) when we travel to play against Sussex Sharks at the 1st Central County Ground, Hove where the match will get underway at 2:30pm.

Somerset are currently second in the South Group table with 12 points from their nine matches, whilst Sussex Sharks are fourth with 10 points from eight matches.

Since T20 cricket was first introduced to the domestic schedule in 2003 the two sides have met on nine occasions. Somerset have won three matches, Sussex have triumphed on five occasions and one game ended in a no result.

Somerset’s highest innings total in the series is 177 for four at Taunton in 2011, while for Sussex it is 222 for three at Hove in 2016.

The highest individual score for Somerset is 87 not out by Marcus Trescothick at Taunton in 2011, and for Sussex it is 112 not out by Chris Nash at Hove in 2016.

The best bowling for Somerset is five for 31 by Dirk Nannes at Arundel in 2014 while for Sussex it is five for 18 by Ollie Rayner at Hove in 2011.

When the two sides met in 2017 it was Somerset who triumphed by 32 runs (D/L method) at the Cooper Associates County Ground.

Rain reduced the match to eight overs per side and after being put into bat Somerset posted 102 for three. Corey Anderson smashed 41 off just 18 balls.

When Sussex replied Stiaan van Zyl made 42 not out but the visitors ended well short of their target on 71 for four as Max Waller took two for 12.

Ahead of the match Somerset Head Coach, Jason Kerr said: “Sussex are a strong unit and the division is really tight at the moment. All the teams seem to be beating each other which shows that there are no easy games. The guys are incredibly confident after our recent performances and we’re looking forward to the challenge.

“Momentum is all about confidence and we have seen how our guys have grown game by game. We are winning the pressure situations at the moment and if that continues it will bode well for the rest of the competition.”
