Who’s doing what this winter

Although the 2019 cricket season is now over, the work isn’t at an end for the Somerset players.

The domestic campaign may have finished in September, but the majority of the squad won’t have the chance to put their feet up for long as the head off to ply their trade in warmer climates!

Several members of the team will be representing their countries over the course of the next few months.

Tom Banton and Lewis Gregory have been named in the England IT20 squad for the five-match tour of New Zealand. Tom has also been selected to play for Brisbane Heat in the KFC Big Bash League.

Jack Leach will also be on England duty after being selected in the Test squad for the two-match series against New Zealand which begins at the end of November.

Kasey Aldridge, Lewis Goldsworthy and Sam Young will also be representing England after being named in the U19 squad for the tour to the Caribbean in November and December. The Young Lions will play in a 50-over tri-series against West Indies U19 and Sri Lanka U19. The series is the last competitive test for the young players before the ICC U19 World Cup, which takes place in South Africa in January and February 2020.

Roelof van der Merwe is currently in Oman with the Netherlands having just completed a Pentangular IT20 tournament against the host nation, Ireland, Hong Kong and Nepal. He will soon head to Dubai with his countrymen as they take part in a number of ICC T20 World Cup qualifying matches against Kenya, Namibia, Singapore, Papua New Guinea, Bermuda and Scotland.

Josh Davey will also be involved in the ICC T20 World Cup qualifiers after being named in the Scotland squad for those fixtures.

Tom Lammonby has travelled to Australia to play for Perth-based Rockingham Mandurah District CC. He made his debut at the weekend, scoring 50 from 51 balls.

Eddie Byrom will also be spending the winter in Perth where he will be representing Fremantle CC.

Max Waller will once again be heading to South Africa to spend the winter months playing for Milnerton CC, whilst Nathan Gilchrist will also be heading to South Africa where he will be training and carrying out his strength & conditioning work before returning to Taunton after Christmas.

The remaining members of the squad will be carrying out their pre-season preparation with the staff at Somerset County Cricket Club as they get ready for the new season.
