Will history repeat itself?

Somerset take on Hampshire Hawks in the semi-final of the Vitality Blast at Edgbaston tomorrow (Saturday).

It is a repeat of last year’s fixture at the same stage of the competition.

It was a game that had everything and was certainly one of the most dramatic encounters in the history of T20 cricket.

Ahead of this weekend’s clash, we look back on that incredible game.

Somerset v Hampshire Hawks: 2021 Vitality Blast Semi-Final

Somerset showed tremendous character and tenacity as they secured a stunning win over Hampshire Hawks in the first Vitality Blast semi-final at Edgbaston.

It looked an impossible task when they slipped to 79 for six, but Tom Abell (50) and Ben Green (35 from 18) brought their team back from the brink after Joe Weatherley (71 off 50 balls) had earlier put Hampshire in the driving seat.

Green gave his side genuine hope until he was caught at long on leaving Somerset requiring 12 from seven balls.

Craig Overton and Josh Davey then saw their side over the line with two balls to spare as the Club’s players, coaches Members and supporters celebrated their great escape.

After hitting the winning runs, Josh Davey said: “How Abes and Lewis built the platform for us to get back in the game was really good, and I think Ben Green’s innings changed the game. He really switched the momentum and by the time I went in the equation was back in our favour.

“It was an amazing feeling to hit the winning runs. I knew when I hit it that it was four. The field was up, I middled it and I knew it was gone and then Craig jumped on me! It was one of the best feelings I’ve had in cricket and the roar from the crowd was brilliant.”
