Somerset wrap up win inside two days

Somerset completed an easy win over Oxford MCCU with a day to spare at the Cooper Associates County Ground.

Resuming on 57 for seven, the students were bowled out for 72 before Somerset batted for a second time and scored 277 for six declared, Pete Trego making 161 and Jack Leach 65.

Chasing 658 for victory Oxford were bowled out for 151 giving the hosts victory by 506 runs.

Somerset wasted no time in wrapping up the Oxford MCCU innings and off the fourth ball of the third over of the day Steve Green played a loose shot to a delivery from Lewis Gregory and was caught by Ryan Davies.

Ed Ellis who had moved on to 20 flashed outside the off stump to  Craig Overton and was caught at second slip by Marcus Trescothick which made the students 70 for nine.  Two more runs were added before Gregory finished things off when he bowled Tom Heathfield for two as Oxford were all out for 72.

The pick of the Somerset attack were Craig Overton, who claimed three for 18 off nine overs with three maidens, while Gregory took three for 32 off 9.2 with one maiden.

Batting for a second time with a lead of 380, openers Tom Abell and Trescothick added 37 for the first wicket before the captain, who was on 16, edged an away swinger from Lake to first slip.

Trego was promoted to three and along with Trescothick saw up the 50, however shortly afterwards the opener was caught by ‘keeper Ellis off Lake for 22.  Ryan Davies and Craig Overton were out cheaply before Jack Leach came in to join Trego with the score on 86 for four and for the next 30 overs the pair played an array of attacking shots.

Trego took his runs whenever he could and duly went to his century with a single off Jack McIver, his runs coming off 103 balls with with 15 fours and one six, not long after which Leach saw up his 50 off 69 balls with seven fours and two sixes.

The pair had added 182 for the fifth wicket when Leach, who had moved onto 65, was bowled by McIver which made Somerset 268 for five.

Two overs later Trego was also out for 161, his runs coming off 139 balls and including 21 fours and four sixes, at which point Somerset declared on 277 for six off 53.2 overs.

Batting for a second time chasing an unlikely target of 658 the visitors were soon in trouble when  Lewis Gregory bowled Alex Martin with the score on two.  Wells and McIver took the score onto 20 when Wells was caught by Gregory off Craig Overton for seven in the 10th over.  McIver and Bruno Broughton saw the score onto 42 when the former was caught by Davies off Jamie Overton and without addition Broughton was caught by Craig Overton off Tim Groenewald.

Despite wickets falling regularly at the opposite end Malcolm Lake went to his 50 with a big six off Leach that landed on the Ian Botham Stand.  With Ellis, the all rounder added 73 runs before he was caught on the long on boundary by Trego off Leach for 65 going for another big shot.  Once Lake was out the rest of the innings crumbled until Oxford MCCU were all out for 151.

For Somerset Craig Overton ended with three for 14 off 5.5 overs, with three maidens while brother Jamie took three for 32 off seven.

Afterwards Trego said: “Its been a brilliant pre-season for us so far and to finish with a 506 run victory inside two days is a great effort. Everyone got a bit of time at the crease with the bat and the bowlers all put in some really meaningful spells so it has been an all round good exercise.”

Talking about his own innings Trego said: “It’s always nice but the real stuff starts next week against Essex and if I can chalk up that many against them then I will be happy.”

He added: “All throughout pre-season all the batters have got a score and all the bowlers have been in the wickets and the slip catching today was phenomenal so it really does bode well for a positive start to the season.”
