Despite standout performances from Michael Leask and Dom Bess Somerset lost their Second XI Trophy match against Essex at Taunton Vale today by four wickets with 16 balls to spare.
After opting to bat first in a match that was reduced to a 45 over contest because of the rain, Somerset found themselves on 93 for six in the 23rd over when Academy youngster Tom Lammonby was joined in the middle by Leask.
Between them the pair added 59 before Lammonby was run out for 31. Jack Leach then joined Leask, who was in full flow and the eighth wicket partnership added 86 in 10 overs before Leach was out in the 43rd for 38 off 27 balls.
Leask was eventually out for 82 which he scored off 64 balls with eight fours and three sixes as Somerset ended their innings on 253 for nine.
When Essex replied Ben Green made an early breakthrough with the total on 11, but the Essex second wicket pair had taken the score onto 65 when Dom Bess was introduced into the attack. The off spinner proceeded to reduce the visitors to 119 for five in the 24th over before his stint was over and he finished with four for 33 from his allotted nine.
Essex then recovered thanks to opener Paul Walter who hit an unbeaten 145 to reach help his side reach their target for the loss of one more wicket which fell to Leask.
