Second XI qualify for Trophy semi-final this Friday

Somerset have won their way through to the semi-finals of the 2017 Second XI Trophy where they will entertain Yorkshire at the Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton on Friday June 2nd starting at 11am. Entry to this match will be free.

Second XI coach Steve Snell said: “It’s really exciting that we have reached the semi-final. This gives the guys the chance to experience playing cricket under pressure and to play a strong county like Yorkshire is a really challenging prospect.

“The boys have played some excellent cricket and throughout the tournament it has been pleasing to see some of them transition from the side into the First Team. Adam Hose is a great example of that. He’s done well in pre-season and also in the Trophy so for him to transfer that form to the First Team is what it’s all about.

“We’ve got a lot of talent with players like Ryan Davies, George Bartlett and Eddie Byrom who have all beeen consistent and made some brilliant contributions. The bowling they have faced has been mixed but they have played against the likes of Stuart Meaker and Ravi Rampaul for Surrey and they showed that they are capable to scoring runs against that type of bowling as well.

“Ben Green has captained quite a number of the games and we have tried to provide him with some leadership opportunities because he shows some outstanding characteristics and he has done a great job.

“Jim Allenby captained a couple of games before the First Team season started and now Ben has carried on from that and done an excellent job. He’s had some very helpful conversations with Chris Rogers who has been around for most of the Second XI Trophy and it’s been really insightful to see the two talking. Hopefully as the season progresses there will be more opportunities for Ben and I am sure that he will keep on learning.”

Steve went on: “The games now come thick and fast and leading up to the SET semi-final we’ve got a four-day friendly against Warwickshire which is a good chance for the guys to play some four-day cricket. After that we are into the main part of the season as the T20 and Championship games start to come thick and fast.”

For this match the 1875 Club will be available to both 1875 Club Members and Long Room Members on production of their Membership card.
