Tom Abell: Injury Update

Somerset Club Captain, Tom Abell was back at the Cooper Associates County Ground this week after injury forced him to come home early from Australia.

The 27-year-old was appearing in the Big Bash for Brisbane Heat following his time with the England Lions, but a lateral knee ligament injury during his second match in the BBL has resulted in his premature return.

We spoke to him this morning and he had some good news for our Members and supporters.

“It’s one of those injuries that sounds worse than it actually is,” he said. “I should only be out of action for between four to six weeks, and it’s already been two weeks.

“It was a bit of an innocuous one really. I stretched in the field, and I heard a noise in my knee. Thankfully, it wasn’t as bad as it sounded.

“The plan now is to just make sure that I’m 100% fit for the summer because I want to be ready to go for the start of the season.

“It may well affect my participation in the PSL, but I’m just doing whatever I can to recover as effectively as possible because I want to be in the best possible place for the summer. Obviously, I want to take opportunities to be involved in top quality competitions like the PSL when I have the chance, but my focus is currently making sure that I am as fit as I can be without looking too far ahead. I certainly won’t be rushing back before my body is right.”

Somerset CCC Head of Science & Medicine, Jamie Thorpe said: “The timeframe that we are looking at is an initial four to six weeks, however it will take a bit longer than that to get him back to full match-fitness.

“Tom has been away for the last two months and from his perspective it will be beneficial for him to spend some time with us getting himself prepared for the summer. He will be spending the next few weeks building up his strength and conditioning.

“As a Sport Science & Medicine team, we really enjoy seeing our players participating in global competitions because it is a tremendous opportunity for them, but ultimately we want every player to be 100% ready to go at the start of our domestic season. That has to be our main focus and priority.”
